Liposuction

Proportion, balance, and contour are core aspects of an attractive body. Cosmetic surgeons can use liposuction for sculpting your body into a better shape. Liposuction body contouring plastic surgery can be used in most of the major parts of the body for achieving subtle yet highly effective aesthetic improvements.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Baumholtz provides liposuction surgery to patients in Shavano Park, San Antonio, Texas, and surrounding locations.

What is Liposuction Used for?

Liposuction cosmetic surgery removes excess fat deposits for sculpting targeted areas, such as the abdomen, love handles, buttocks, thighs, upper arms, breast, back, neck, and calves. The procedure is best known for fat removal to enhance contours, but can also be useful in refining the shape.

Cosmetic surgeons sometimes recommend liposuction for correcting the results of other surgical procedures. For many patients with stubborn fat bulges, there is no technique better than liposuction which results in detailed improvements in a less invasive way.

Should I Get Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction is performed on both men and women for achieving a wide variety of personal goals. You should consider liposuction if one or more of the following applies to you:

“I have stubborn fat bulges on my belly, hips, neck, thighs, arms, chin, and chest that doesn’t respond to exercise or diet.”

Liposuction is great for reducing stubborn fat deposits for a beautifully contoured body.

“I feel that certain body areas are not in proportion with other parts.”

You can achieve better balance by reducing excess fat from certain body parts.

“My skin has good elasticity – sagging skin is not a concern.”

The skin should be well-toned to contract to your body’s new contours for optimal results.

“I am close to my ideal body weight.”

Liposuction is recommended for reducing local fat deposits. You would have higher satisfaction from the procedure when you are overall happy with your existing weight.

Types of Liposuction Surgery

There are several different techniques of liposuction available to surgeons. The technology used in the fat removal process is the primary difference between each liposuction type. Generally, cosmetic surgeons prefer a certain technique depending on the extent and nature of the procedure.

You should remember that the experience and skill of the plastic surgeon performing the procedure will make a big difference to your results. These are a few different types of liposuction techniques commonly used:

Tumescent Liposuction

The plastic surgeon in the tumescent technique will inject an anesthetic “tumescent” solution for minimizing discomfort and bleeding during the procedure. This type of liposuction is generally performed along with local anesthesia.

Laser or Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction

Ultrasound or laser heat energy is used in this technique for breaking up or loosening the fatty tissue from the body. It allows for easier removal of fat deposits resulting in a less traumatic and more effective cosmetic surgery.

How Does Liposuction Work?

Your plastic surgeon will make small incisions (one or more) at the treatment area. A thin tube or cannula is inserted in these incisions for loosening fat under the skin. The fat is then suctioned out. It can take 1 to 2 hours for the entire procedure depending on the number of treatment areas.
